A brief History of Boyakonda Gangamma Temple
Many many years ago there lived some tribal groups in and around the Hill where Gangamma Temple is located. They were ruled by the Nawab rulers who tortured them and exploited them in a number of ways. The tribal groups stood up against the oppression and revolted against the rulers. But the poor tribal people couldn’t withstand the might of Nawab army and fled to forest around the hill where they started praying almighty to help them. It is said that the spirit of Goddess Shakti descended and saved the tribal people and also defeated the Nawab’s army. Locals say that Goddess Shakti tied the heads of Nawab armymen to Banyan Tree branches.
- As a mark of respect the tribal group Boyas built this temple. The huge well inside the temple is said to contain water with magical properties. It is said to cure various skin ailments.
- Local people say the water is powerful and sprinkling it in the field can help good harvesting
- There is also a custom here of placing flower on head of the deity. People come here with wishes and place a flower on the head of the deity, if the flower falls on the right side it’s a positive sign for the fulfillment of the wishes.
Boyakonda Gangamma temple also has a custom of offering the deity sacrificial animals like Lamb and Goat. You can see a flood of restaurants around the temple compound which prepares Non-vegetarian food.
