Lucidchart is a diagramming tool that helps you create visual graphs, sketches and diagrams. You can use it for Project management, design, brainstorming, communicating with customers or developers etc. It also comes as chrome/firefox extensions. More or less it would help in all stages of SDLC. In one of my previous posts, I covered the review on, Lucidchart chrome extension and how to install and create your own sketches and diagrams. Let’s see how we can create Lucidchart diagrams from Google drive.
The pre-requisite to creating Lucidchart sketches from Google Drive is to install the chrome extension. This helps creating an association between Google drive and Lucidchart through google email account Id.
Once the extension is enabled in your drive, you will be able to create Lucidchart diagram right from your Google drive. This is because it works seamlessly with Google Drive. Here is how you go about creating your diagrams right from drive home screen.
Go to your Google drive main page and look for the create button. You use the Create button to create your files and folders on Google drive. Press the Create button. Pressing the create button opens up a list of documents that you can create.
You will also find Lucidchart Diagram in the list. Go ahead and create your diagram by selecting it.
You will see a redirection to Lucidchart – Create new Document workflow.
What if you don’t see Lucidchart Diagram in Create list ?
If you don’t see the Lucidchart Diagram then you need to add this by using connect more apps option. Here is how you do it. In the bottom of Create lists you will find – connect more apps. On clicking this you will be able to search and select “Lucidchart” and connect it to your Google Drive account. Once done, you can create Lucidchart diagram using the Create button.
The create document or template selection page looks as shown in the previous image titled – lucidChart template. Here you can select the template that you need and start with the creation process. All you need is selecting and dragging/dropping the required stencil and SVG. The standard template contains a lot of different diagrams like – UML , Flowchart, Wireframe, ERD and so much more. The tool provides standard text formatting features and you can edit your texts as required. Also note that you can select the unit as centimeters or inches. Enjoy the ease of creating diagrams with Lucidchart.
Saving the Created Diagram/Sketch to Google Drive
Once finished with your diagram/sketch, just visit the file tab and select save. This will save the diagram to your Google drive. It will use the name that you provided while creating the diagram.
Exporting the Diagram/Sketch
After completing your work if you would like to export it to other formats. Go to file -> export and select the format with which would like to save. The diagram gets saved to your Google drive with that format. Currently PNG, JPEG, PDF and VDX (Visio) are supported.
Sharing with others and publishing as a page
The most interesting feature in my opinion. You can share the newly created diagram directly from the tool. Just press the blue share button and enter the email ids of the people with whom you want to share.
Also the share button allows you to publish the page to web. Just select the publish tab and publish your diagram as pdf or web page. The page gets published as a web document/pdf to a public link, which you can grab and share!
If you find any issues, difficulty, please leave a note/comment.
